I have received many Emails and questions regarding having several versions of Diablo (1.04,1.05, and 1.07) on the same computer.  Many people are die hard 1.04 fans. And the same can be said for 1.05. There are benefits to having several versions. You can use versions 1.04 and 1.05 to edit your character and equipment using the "Modem" option of multiplayer. You can then use your character on 1.07.  Also many people have two computers and play family members and wish to have the ability to hack their characters and use the multitude of .dat files available. With the Hellfire modified executables from Varaya & Khan as well as the many mods available for Diablo, you may wish to have several versions available to you so that you can enjoy the games more.

What I will present here is the way to have several versions.   This may be normal information for the more computer savvy, but my email suggests that many have no idea where to begin.

Since you already have one version of Diablo on your computer, you can leave that one on the HDD with only a few changes to the directory name.  Change the current directory name from "Diablo" to another of your choosing.  Lets say for instance that you currently are using version 1.07 of Diablo. 

Change the name of the current Diablo directory by right-clicking on the name, and selecting the rename file option.  Name the directory anything you wish.

Place the Diablo CD in the player and execute the program.   If you have successfully changed the previous directory name, the computer will think you do not have Diablo on your computer and will offer you the option of "Install and Play Diablo". Choose this option.

Once the directory name prompt appears, you can either let it be created on your HDD (usually C drive) or you can select the drive and path if desired.   Name the directory anything you wish as long as the name is different from the first Diablo directory. 

Since we are assuming that the first version of Diablo you have is version 1.07, we will make the new installation of Diablo version 1.05.  Go to the File Archives section and obtain the version 1.05 patch.   Download the patch and extract it to the newly created directory.

Double click on the upgrade to automatically install version 1.05. Simply repeat this procedure for each version of Diablo or Hellfire you wish to have. Technically you can have Diablo versions 1.04, 1.05, 1.07, Varaya & Khan Diablo 1.07, Hellfire, Hellfire 1.01, Varaya & Khan for Hellfire, and the many different mods that are available.
